For most Texas garages, polyaspartic wins. It cures in hours instead of days, stays UV stable instead of ambering, and flexes with a moving slab. Epoxy builds a harder, thicker, cheaper film and is the better base coat when a slab has moisture issues. Most good floors use both.
They are not competitors, they are layers
The framing of this question is usually wrong. Epoxy and polyaspartic are not two brands of the same thing, they are two chemistries that do different jobs, and the best residential floors in this market often use both: an epoxy or polyurea base for build and adhesion, flake broadcast into it, then a polyaspartic topcoat for UV stability and abrasion resistance. When a contractor tells you it must be one or the other, they are describing what they stock, not what your slab needs.
Cure time, which is the difference you will actually feel
Polyaspartic cures in hours. A crew grinds in the morning and topcoats in the afternoon, and you park on it the next day. Epoxy needs a full cure cycle measured in days, and in that window the garage is unusable and everything that lived in it is in your driveway or on your lawn. For a household this is the single most tangible difference between the two, and it is why a one-day floor commands a premium.
UV stability, which is the difference you will see in year two
Unprotected epoxy ambers. Ultraviolet light breaks down the resin and a bright white or light gray floor drifts yellow, unevenly, worst near the door where the sun reaches. Polyaspartic is UV stable and holds its color. In a garage where the door stands open half the weekend, or in any exterior application like a patio or a pool deck, this alone settles the question.
Flexibility and the North Texas slab
This region sits on expansive clay that swells in the wet season and shrinks in the dry one, and slabs move with it. Epoxy cures hard and rigid, so movement transfers into the film and shows up as cracking. Polyaspartic stays slightly flexible and absorbs a degree of that movement. On a slab that already has hairline movement cracks, the flexible system is not a preference, it is the correct specification.
Where epoxy is genuinely the better answer
Epoxy costs less per square foot and builds a thicker film per coat, which matters on a rough or pitted slab that needs filling. It has better chemical resistance to certain solvents. It is more forgiving of application conditions, and polyaspartic's fast cure is unforgiving of a slow crew. And as a moisture-tolerant primer over a slab that tests wet, an epoxy vapor barrier is the standard fix. On an interior slab with no sun exposure, in a workshop that sees chemicals, epoxy is a defensible choice on the merits.

Is polyaspartic the same as polyurea?
Polyaspartic is a subset of polyurea, engineered with a longer working time so a crew can actually spread it. In practice the industry uses the terms loosely and a polyurea base with a polyaspartic topcoat is a common and correct specification.
Does polyaspartic scratch more easily than epoxy?
No. Polyaspartic generally has better abrasion resistance, which is why it is used as the topcoat. What it has less of is film thickness per coat, which is a different property and is why a base coat sits underneath it.
How much more does polyaspartic cost?
In this market a full flake system with a polyaspartic topcoat runs $6 to $10 per square foot installed, against $5 to $6.50 for a solid color system. The premium is real but modest, and it buys you the one-day schedule and the UV stability.
Can polyaspartic go over an existing epoxy floor?
Sometimes, if the existing coating is sound and well bonded, and after abrading it. If the existing floor is peeling, blistering or has hot tire lift anywhere, it comes off first. Coating over a failing floor just puts a new film on the same failure.
