Pet & Dog Turf
Pet turf and dog runs: what actually controls odor
Short answer
Odor in pet turf is a drainage and infill problem, not a turf problem. Urine passes through the backing, so whatever sits under and within the turf decides whether it flushes away or stays. Pet areas are built with a free-draining base and an infill chosen for that duty, and the work is quoted after a site measure.
Dog runs that drain and do not hold smell
Overview
Artificial grass for dogs is the single most searched turf application, and it is also the one most often sold on the wrong specification. Buyers compare pile height and face weight. Dogs do not care about either. What determines whether a dog run smells in August is how fast liquid leaves the system and what it passes through on the way.
Why pet areas fail
Urine moves through perforated backing into the base. If the base holds it, or if the infill retains organic material, bacteria do the rest and heat makes it obvious. The fix is upstream of the turf: a base that flushes, an infill that does not hold residue, and a perimeter that lets you rinse without flooding a flower bed. A pet area built like a lawn area will usually disappoint in the first hot month.
- Free-draining base with a route out, not a sealed pan
- Infill selected for flushing rather than for ballast alone
- A rinse plan that has somewhere for the water to go
Infill, with a real source
Infill is the most consequential and least discussed choice in a pet installation. Materials differ in weight, heat behaviour, cost, durability and environmental profile, and the trade-offs are documented. The Norwegian Environment Agency has published a comparison of infill materials that is more useful than vendor literature because it applies the same criteria to each option. Ask which infill is proposed for your dog area, what it is made of, and why it suits that duty rather than a lawn.
Dog runs and side yards
A dedicated run is often a better answer than converting a whole lawn. Runs are small, they take concentrated traffic and concentrated urine, and they are where the drainage detail earns its money. A run also lets you keep natural grass elsewhere if that is what you want, and it is usually the cheapest way to test whether turf works for your dogs before committing the main yard.
What we will not claim
We do not publish an odor-elimination guarantee, an antimicrobial performance claim or a surface temperature for your yard. Those require testing on the installed product in your conditions. We will tell you what the build does, what maintenance it needs and what it is quoted at.

Will dog urine damage artificial turf?
The turf fibres and backing are not degraded by urine in normal use. The problem is retention: if liquid and residue stay in the base or the infill, odor follows. That is why the base and infill specification matters more than the turf grade for a pet area.
How do you clean a dog area?
Solids are removed as you would on grass, and the area is rinsed. How often depends on how many dogs use how small an area. A build with a working drainage route makes rinsing effective; a build without one just moves the problem.
Is pet turf different from lawn turf?
The turf itself may be similar, but the installation is not. Pet areas get a drainage-led base and an infill chosen for flushing. Buying lawn turf and calling it pet turf is the most common mistake we see.
Can dogs dig through it?
Determined diggers go for edges, which is why perimeter detailing matters on a dog run. Tell us about digging behaviour before we quote so the edges are built for it.
