Artificial Turf
Artificial turf for DFW yards, dog runs and putting greens
Short answer
Professional Garage Concepts installs artificial turf across the Dallas-Fort Worth metro for lawns, dog runs, play areas, poolside surrounds and putting greens. Every turf project is quoted after a site measure, because base depth, drainage and any irrigation changes decide the real scope. Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington each regulate landscape watering differently, and those rules change what turf is worth at your address.
Artificial turf, installed for North Texas clay and heat
Overview
Artificial turf is a drainage and base project with a grass-coloured surface on top. On North Texas blackland clay that distinction decides whether a lawn drains or holds water. The North Texas Municipal Water District publishes clay absorption at about a tenth of an inch per hour, which is why the excavation and aggregate base matter more than the turf product specification most buyers start by comparing.
Where turf earns its place in a North Texas yard
Turf is usually chosen for one of four reasons, and each one points at a different build. Dog owners want drainage and odor control. Parents want a surface with documented fall attenuation under play equipment. Golfers want a true roll. Homeowners under watering restrictions want to stop irrigating a lawn they are only allowed to water on two assigned days. The reason drives the base, the infill and the pile, so it belongs in the conversation before any product is named.
- Dog runs and pet areas, where drainage and infill choice govern odor
- Play areas under equipment, where fall height is a published safety standard
- Backyard and office putting greens, where surface roll matters more than appearance
- Lawn replacement in shade, on slopes or in strips that never established
What the installation actually involves
Scope varies by site, which is why the work is measured before it is quoted. The sequence is consistent even when the depths are not: remove existing material, cut grade to allow for base and turf thickness, deal with the existing irrigation, build and compact an aggregate base, lay and cut the turf, join seams, secure the perimeter, then brush in infill. Drainage permeability has a published test method, ASTM F2898, if you want to compare products on a measured basis rather than on a brochure claim.
- Existing irrigation zones usually need capping or reworking
- Base depth is a site decision, not a catalogue number
- Seams and perimeter edges are where most visible failures start
- Infill is a performance choice, not a filler
Three DFW cities, three different sets of rules
Watering rules are not uniform across the metro, and one of them restricts turf directly. Dallas Development Code Section 51A-10.103(a) states that artificial plant materials, including synthetic turf, may not be used to satisfy the requirements of the landscaping article. Fort Worth runs a year-round twice-weekly assigned-day schedule under Ordinance 21194-07-2014, with published administrative fees. Arlington prohibits irrigation between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. year round under Water and Sewer Chapter Section 4.27, and that section carries no days-per-week cap at all. Check your own address before you plan around any of this.
- Dallas: synthetic turf cannot satisfy required landscaping
- Fort Worth: two assigned days, year round, with escalating fees
- Arlington: time-of-day ban year round, no standing weekly cap in code
What we will not tell you
We do not publish a turf price per square foot, because the figures circulating online are vendor marketing rather than measured installed cost, and because base depth and irrigation work move the number more than the turf does. We also do not claim a water saving for your property, a surface temperature, or a lifespan, without the measurement behind it. Ask for the installed total, what is included, and what would change it.

Does artificial turf drain on North Texas clay?
It drains through the turf backing into the base you build under it. The base is what carries water away, which is why clay sites need the excavation and aggregate designed rather than assumed. The North Texas Municipal Water District puts clay absorption at roughly a tenth of an inch per hour.
Can I put artificial turf in my front yard in Dallas?
Dallas Development Code Section 51A-10.103(a) bars synthetic turf from satisfying the requirements of the landscaping article. The source document does not state whether turf is barred outright from a private residential yard carrying no required-landscape obligation, so confirm your specific situation with Dallas Sustainable Development before planning a front yard installation.
What does artificial turf cost to install?
We quote after measuring the area, checking drainage and seeing what the existing irrigation does. Published per-square-foot figures are generally vendor marketing and they leave out base depth and irrigation work, which are the two variables that actually move an installed total.
Will my HOA allow artificial turf?
That depends on your recorded covenants. Texas Property Code Section 202.007 protects water-conserving natural turf, and artificial turf is not named in it. Read your own covenants and get your own advice before you assume state law overrides them.
