Turf Installation

How artificial turf installation works on North Texas clay

Short answer

Artificial turf installation is an excavation and base project. On North Texas clay the base carries the water, so grade, aggregate depth and compaction decide whether the surface drains. Existing irrigation usually needs capping or reworking. Scope is quoted after a site measure because depth and irrigation changes vary by site far more than the turf product does.

Overview

Most turf comparisons start with the product: pile height, face weight, backing. Those matter, but they are not what fails. Visible turf failures in North Texas are overwhelmingly base failures, seam failures and edge failures, and all three are decided during installation rather than at purchase.

Why clay changes the build

The North Texas Municipal Water District publishes clay soil absorption at about a tenth of an inch per hour. Water arriving faster than that has to go somewhere other than down, which means the base under the turf has to move it laterally to an outfall. That is a design decision tied to your grade, not a standard detail. Sites that slope toward a structure, sit in a low spot or back onto a fence line with no outfall need that resolved before any turf is cut.

  • Grade is cut to allow for base plus turf thickness, so finished height meets adjacent hardscape
  • Aggregate base is built and compacted in lifts
  • Water needs a route out, not just a route down

Comparing drainage honestly

ASTM F2898 is the standard test method for water permeability of synthetic turf. If a product claim matters to your decision, ask which test produced the number. A permeability figure with no method behind it is not comparable to one that has a method, and backing perforation patterns differ enough between products that the difference is real.

Irrigation, permits and licensing

Most residential turf jobs touch an existing irrigation system. In Texas, anyone installing or altering a landscape irrigation system connected to a public water supply works under Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules in 30 TAC Chapters 30 and 344, and TCEQ is the licensing authority. Fort Worth adds its own layer: the city requires a permit for irrigation system installation, and for alteration of a system by 20 percent or more, inside the city or its extraterritorial jurisdiction. Fort Worth also requires a backflow prevention device at the water supply connection, independently tested. Permits there run through Development Services.

  • TCEQ licenses irrigators statewide under 30 TAC Chapters 30 and 344
  • Fort Worth: permit required, 20 percent alteration threshold
  • Fort Worth: tested backflow prevention at the supply connection

Seams, edges and infill

Seams are where turf announces itself. They are planned around the shape of the area rather than placed wherever a roll ends, and the joint is bonded and secured rather than simply butted. Perimeter edges need something to hold them, which on most residential sites means a fixed border or a buried anchor detail against hardscape. Infill is brushed in last and is a performance decision covered on the pet turf page, where it matters most.

Frequently asked questions

Still stuck? Call (817) 809-9236 and talk to someone who does this every day.

How deep does the base need to be?

It is a site decision. Grade, drainage route, soil condition and what the area will carry all change it, which is why we measure before quoting rather than publishing a single depth. Ask any installer what depth they are proposing and why that depth for your yard.

Do you have to remove the existing grass?

Existing material is removed as part of cutting grade. Laying turf over living grass leaves organic material to decompose under a sealed surface and gives the base nothing stable to compact against.

What happens to my sprinklers?

Zones under the turf area generally need capping or reworking, and in Fort Worth altering a system by 20 percent or more triggers a city permit. Keep any remaining zones serving beds and trees working, since those still need water.

How long does an installation take?

It depends on the area, the excavation and the drainage work, so we give a schedule with the quote after seeing the site rather than a standard duration.
