Run the Texas numbers. A single-layer steel door facing west takes direct afternoon sun from about 2pm until sunset in July and August. Surface temperatures on that steel go past 120F, and a bare steel panel has effectively no resistance to moving that heat inside. If the garage is attached, that heat loads the shared wall, the ceiling, and any bedroom or bonus room built above the garage. Your air conditioner fights it all evening.

What R-value actually means on a garage door

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is better. The complication is that garage door manufacturers publish R-value in more than one way, and the numbers are not comparable.

Most published figures are the R-value of the insulated section itself, measured through the middle of a panel. That number ignores the steel that wraps the panel edges, the joints between sections, and the perimeter of the door. Real installed performance is always lower than the section number on the sticker. Some manufacturers publish a calculated whole-door value that accounts for those losses, and it is usually a good bit lower than the headline number.

What this means practically: do not shop on R-value alone, and do not pay a premium for a jump from R-16 to R-18 on the sticker. Do pay attention to the gap between an R-6 polystyrene door and an R-12 or better polyurethane door, because that difference is large enough to survive the measurement caveats.

The other half of the equation is the perimeter. An R-18 door with a hardened bottom seal and brittle stop moulding leaks more energy through the gaps than it saves through the panels. Insulation and weatherstripping are one project, not two.

  • Uninsulated single-layer steel: effectively R-0 to R-2. Common on DFW builder doors from the 1990s and 2000s.
  • Polystyrene sheet core: roughly R-6 to R-9 depending on thickness and door construction.
  • Polyurethane foamed in place: roughly R-12 to R-18 on the same section thickness.
  • Whole-door installed values run below section values in every case. Treat sticker numbers as a comparison tool, not a promise.

Polystyrene versus polyurethane

These are the two insulation types you will be offered on any DFW door, and the difference is not just the R-value.

Polystyrene is rigid sheet foam cut to size and slid into the steel pan of each section. It is the budget option, it adds meaningful insulation over bare steel, and it adds some stiffness. Because it is a cut sheet dropped into a pan, there are small air gaps at the edges and it does not bond to the steel. On a new door, polystyrene typically adds $500 to $1,000.

Polyurethane is injected as a liquid between the inner and outer steel skins and expands to fill the section completely, bonding to both faces. That bond is what makes the real difference. It fills every void, it makes the section structurally rigid rather than just insulated, and it damps sound noticeably. A polyurethane door is stiffer against wind load, dents less, and runs quieter on the track. It typically adds $1,000 or more on a new door.

For a detached garage that gets shade, polystyrene is defensible. For an attached garage in North Texas, especially a west or south-facing door or one with living space above it, polyurethane is the version worth buying.

  • Polystyrene: cut sheet, R-6 to R-9, adds $500 to $1,000, some edge gaps, no bond to steel.
  • Polyurethane: foamed in place, R-12 to R-18, adds $1,000 plus, bonds to both skins, stiffer and quieter.
  • Polyurethane is the better choice on wide double doors, which flex more and need the section rigidity.
  • Both add weight, which means the springs have to be sized to the heavier door.

Insulating the door you have versus replacing it

Retrofit insulation kits exist, and there are cases where they are the right call. There are more cases where they are not.

A retrofit makes sense when the door is under about ten years old, the sections are straight and rust-free, the door is a single-layer steel pan design with an open back, and the garage is detached or the door faces north or east. In that situation a kit gets you a meaningful step up for a modest spend.

One detail that gets skipped and should not be. Adding insulation adds weight, sometimes 30 to 60 pounds across the door. The springs were sized to the original weight. If nobody adjusts spring tension after the kit goes on, the door runs heavy, the opener works against it every cycle, and you buy an opener sooner than you would have. We rebalance any door we insulate, and if you insulate one yourself, get the balance checked.

Replacement is the better money when the door is past 15 years, has rust at the bottom edge, has creased or delaminating sections, or is an uninsulated single-layer door on an attached west-facing garage. A retrofit on a door in that condition is insulation bolted to a problem. A new insulated Amarr door installed in DFW runs $3,500 to $20,000 for a double, with a typical job around $4,500.

What insulation does and does not do in a Texas garage

Being straight about this matters, because the wrong expectation is how people end up disappointed with a good product.

An insulated door will not make an uncooled garage comfortable in August. Nothing will, on its own. The garage also has an uninsulated slab absorbing heat, walls that may be uninsulated, and a roof over it. What an insulated door does is remove the single largest heat-radiating panel from that equation and flatten the peak.

What you will actually notice: the garage runs cooler in the late afternoon and holds it longer overnight, the wall shared with the house stops radiating in the evening, rooms above the garage even out, the door is markedly quieter on the track, and the garage becomes usable as a gym, shop or work area in shoulder seasons instead of only in winter. If you charge an electric vehicle in the garage or store anything temperature-sensitive, that peak reduction is the whole point.

The honest sequence for a hot DFW garage is: insulated door first because it is the biggest surface, then a full perimeter seal set so the conditioned air and the dust stay on the right sides of the opening, then attic and wall insulation if the garage is going to become real living or working space.
