Putting Greens
Backyard and office putting greens, built for roll
Short answer
A synthetic putting green is shaped before it is surfaced. Contour, base compaction and fringe transitions decide how a ball rolls, and the putting surface itself is a different product from lawn turf. Backyard and office greens are designed around the space and the shots you want, then quoted after a site measure.
A green is a graded surface, not a turf product
Overview
Putting green demand splits two ways in the harvested search data, and they are different projects. Backyard greens are the larger group. Office greens are a real and separate intent, usually a smaller flat installation in a commercial interior or courtyard. The build differs, so the conversation should start with which one you are asking for.
What controls roll
Speed and trueness come from the base, not the turf. An under-compacted base settles and the green develops dead spots. Contours that look good on a drawing can be unputtable if they were not set and verified during the build. Cup placement, breaks and the fringe transition are design decisions made before any material arrives, which is why a green takes more planning than a lawn area of the same size.
- Base compaction verified in lifts, because settlement shows up as a dead spot
- Contours set and checked during the build, not after
- Fringe and surround transitions planned with cup positions
Backyard greens
Most residential greens are an addition to a yard rather than a replacement for it, often sharing a project with a patio coating or a surround. Size drives what is possible: a small green can hold two or three honest pin positions, and chipping from outside the green needs run-off space and a surround that tolerates it. Tell us the shots you actually want to practise and the space will decide the rest.
Office and commercial greens
Office greens are usually flat, small and indoors or in a courtyard, with different constraints: subfloor condition, fixing method, and how the edge meets existing flooring. There is genuine search demand for office putting greens, and it is a distinct brief from a backyard installation.
What we will not claim
We do not publish a stimp speed, a tour-comparison claim or a price per square foot for greens. Speed depends on the installed product, the contour and maintenance. Ask what surface is proposed, what it is designed to roll like and what the installed total covers.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a putting green need?
Enough for the shots you want. A compact green can carry a few genuine pin positions; chipping needs run-off space beyond the putting surface. We size it against your yard rather than against a minimum.
Is putting green turf the same as lawn turf?
No. Putting surfaces use a short, dense product built for ball roll, and lawn turf will not putt properly. A green also usually has a fringe product around it, which is a third specification.
Can a green be added to an existing patio project?
Often yes, and it is usually more efficient to do the grading once. If you are already looking at a patio or pool deck coating, raise the green at the same time.
Do office putting greens need a different build?
Usually. Interior installations depend on the subfloor, the fixing method and how the edge meets existing flooring, rather than on excavation and drainage.
