Plano Turf
Artificial turf in Plano, and the one place the code excludes it
Short answer
Plano's zoning ordinance names synthetic turf once. Section 17.100.1.E excludes it from required landscaping along street rights-of-way, which is a nonresidential provision. No prohibition on single-family residential artificial turf appears in Article 17. Installations are quoted after a site measure.
Artificial turf in Plano
Overview
Plano is the city where reading the code carefully changes the answer. The one synthetic turf exclusion in its landscaping article is narrower than it first looks, and the parallel residential provision does not carry the same language.
The one provision, read precisely
Plano Zoning Ordinance Section 17.100.1.E, Landscaping along Street Rights-of-Way, requires that area to be planted with turf or other living groundcover and states that gravel, bark mulch, synthetic turfs, or other similar materials are not acceptable. The code uses the plural, synthetic turfs. That is the only mention of synthetic or artificial turf anywhere in Article 17.
- Sec. 17.100.1.E excludes synthetic turf from required street-frontage landscaping
- This is a nonresidential street-frontage requirement, not a residential yard rule
- The parallel multifamily provision, Sec. 17.200.1.C, does not list synthetic turf as unacceptable
The scoped negative, stated honestly
No provision restricting, permitting or conditioning artificial or synthetic turf on single-family residential property appears in Plano Zoning Ordinance Article 17, Landscaping and Tree Preservation, in the version we read in full on November 8, 2026. Two caveats matter and we are not burying them. That version is footer-dated November 7, 2018, and we could not confirm whether Article 17 has been amended since. Articles of the zoning ordinance other than Article 17 were not checked. So this is an absence in one named document at one named version, not a guarantee.
Watering
Plano publishes its watering guidance across three tabs that are injected by script rather than served in the page, so we could not verify Plano's winter rule, its day-assignment detail or its time-of-day restriction from the primary source. Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Richardson and Allen are North Texas Municipal Water District cities, and the district's standing limits are no more than two days per week from April 1 to October 31 and no more than one day per week from November 1 to March 31. Confirm Plano's own schedule with the City.
What to do with this
If your project is a back yard, a dog run, a play area or a putting green on single-family property, Article 17 as read does not speak to it. If your project touches required street-frontage landscaping on a commercial site, Section 17.100.1.E does. Either way, confirm the current version with Plano before you rely on an eight-year-old document.

Does Plano ban artificial turf in front yards?
No single-family front yard prohibition appears in Article 17 of Plano's zoning ordinance in the version we read, footer-dated November 7, 2018. The only synthetic turf exclusion is Section 17.100.1.E, which covers required landscaping along street rights-of-way. Confirm the current version with the City.
What is Section 17.100.1.E?
It requires landscaping along street rights-of-way to be planted with turf or other living groundcover and states that gravel, bark mulch, synthetic turfs, or other similar materials are not acceptable. It is a street-frontage requirement rather than a residential yard rule.
Why the caveats?
Because the version we could obtain is dated November 7, 2018, and we did not check zoning articles outside Article 17. Telling you it is settled would be overstating what we actually read.
What does turf cost in Plano?
We quote after a site measure. Base depth, drainage and any irrigation changes drive an installed total more than the turf product does.
