Steel Gauge: 24 vs 25 vs 26
Gauge measures steel thickness, and the scale runs backward. Lower numbers are thicker. A 24 gauge skin is thicker and stiffer than 25 gauge, which is thicker than 26 gauge. That is the entire rule, and it is the first number to ask any contractor for.
Most builder-grade doors on DFW tract homes are 25 or 26 gauge single-layer steel. They are inexpensive and they dent. A basketball, a bike handlebar, a backing trailer hitch or a hail event will leave a mark you cannot undo, because a dent in a single steel skin has nothing behind it to push against.
Stepping to 24 gauge costs real money and it buys real stiffness. On a wide 16 or 18-foot double door it matters more than on a single, because a wider panel flexes more across its span. If your door faces the street, gets used daily, or has kids and sports equipment near it, 24 gauge is the spend that keeps paying.
