Should you repair or replace a driveway gate
Short answer
Should you repair or replace a driveway gate?
Assess the gate structure, supports, operator, power and safety devices separately. A repair may suit an isolated fault on a serviceable gate. Replacement deserves a quote when structural condition, compatibility or the required operating pattern makes continued repair impractical. Do not judge the whole system by the motor alone.

Record symptoms from a safe distance
Tell the technician whether the gate is stuck, dragging, stopping intermittently or responding differently to the keypad and remote. Note recent storms or impacts without treating them as a confirmed diagnosis. Keep people and vehicles clear of an unstable or unexpectedly moving gate. Do not bypass a safety sensor to force operation.
Ask for a system assessment
The visit should consider the gate leaf, hinges or rollers, support posts, travel path, operator, power and access controls. A new operator cannot by itself correct a binding structure. Ask which issue caused the failure and which additional items are recommendations. Keep the diagnosis and proposed scope together.
Compare a targeted repair with a full proposal
A repair quote should name the failed component, any compatibility limitation and what remains in service. A replacement proposal should show structural work, operator, controls, power work, safety review and disposal where applicable. Ask about access during the work, delivery arrangements and who performs any separate electrical or site work.
Make handover part of the decision
Request a demonstration of normal access, the manufacturer’s release procedure and safety functions from the installer. Keep the equipment manuals and service contact. If replacement is chosen for convenience or appearance, identify that separately from work necessary to restore safe operation.
